MS/HS Bulletin February 2

Good luck to the one act performers today as they present their production of "Shakespeare for Kids!" For those interested in attending, the play will take place at the Johnson Fine Arts Center on NSU's campus tonight at 9:00 pm. Admittance is free!

Saturday, February 18 is the 6th Annual – Lee Schlagel Memorial Basketball Tournament at the Clark High School.  Groton boys’ will be one of the teams playing.  There will be a lunch starting at 11:00 and a silent auction and raffle items.

Quarve Quackers 6th Annual Relay for Life Pie Auction on Saturday, February 18 at Todd’s Tavern in Amherst.  Supper at 5:00 p.m.   Pie auction at 7:00 p.m.  All proceeds to to tMarshall County Relay for Life.

Spring Lifetouch pictures will be taken on Wednesday, February 22.

There will be a Youth Fun Night on Friday, February 3 from 6pm - Midnight at the United Methodist Church.  Enjoy pizza, snacks, games, songs, a movie and more.

The NSU Symphonic Band will perform in the old gym on February 7th from 8:30-9:20.  All students in grades 6-12 will attend.

Summer registration for dual credit is now open.  Applications are on the counter in the office.  Please see Dr. Schwan for questions.

Seniors--Early senior privileges are scheduled to begin on February 24th.  You will not receive early privileges on February 24th if you have had any unexcused absences this school year, suspensions for behavior, or more than one grade of a "D" at the time of early granting.  Please read the handbook regarding the criteria for early senior privileges as well as the requirements for maintaining privileges throughout the remainder of the year, most specifically the GPA and grade requirements.  Seniors will not receive privileges until all senior pictures have been remitted.  You will receive an e-mail from me on February 21st if you are not eligible for early senior privileges.  Please see me with any questions, Dr. Schwan.

Grades 9-12 Graduation Requirements:  When registering please make sure you are taking the required courses:  
Grade 9:  Math, English, World History, Physical Science, PE/Health
Grade 10:  Math, English, Geography/Computer, Biology
Grade 11:  Math, English, US History, Chemistry
Grade 12:  English, Government/Personal Finance
You must also take one year of fine arts and one year of language, CTE (tech, facs, business, internship or ag) to graduate.  For the SD Opportunity Scholarship you must take 4 math, 4 science and 2 language or CTE.   Please see Mrs. Sternhagen with questions.

Students:  When registering for classes please keep in mind the requirements for the South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship – The South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship was established in 2004 for Regents Scholar/SD Opportunity recipients with an ACT score of 24 or greater.  The scholarship provides $6500 over four years to a qualifying student who attends an eligible higher education institution in South Dakota  Regents Scholar/SD Opportunity Scholars– To be a Regents Scholar, students must take four years of English, four years of math (Algebra I and above), four years of science (including courses in biology, chemistry, or physics with labs), four years of English, three years of social studies, two years of the same modern or classical language, one year of fine arts, one year of PE/Health, and one-half year of computers.  No final grade (semester grade) in any Regent Scholar class may be below a C (2.0) and the student must have an unweighted 3.0 (B) cumulative grade average.   Students may be SD Opportunity Scholars by taking the same courses but substituting CTE courses for language courses or taking a combination of language and CTE courses. 
 
Grades 10-11:  You and your parents are invited to a presentation on Getting Ready for your Future on Feb 9th from 6-7 pm in the computer lab.  Jennie Thompson from Great Lakes Financial will be here to teach you and your parents about scholarships and financial aid.

Grade 12:  FAFSA Lab – On Thursday, February 9th at 7 pm during Parent Teacher Conferences, Jennie Thompson from Great Lakes will be available in the computer lab to work with parents on filling out the FAFSA.   Student and parent tax information from 2015 is required along with social security numbers, bank account info, and asset information.  It would be a good idea to get started with the FAFSA prior to meeting with Jennie and then ask her any questions you may have about finishing the process.  You and your student will also need identification numbers (FSAID) in order to complete the FAFSA.
