MS/HS Bulletin February 28

Good luck to the Boys’ Basketball Team at Webster tonight.  Groton plays Britton/Hecla at 6:00 p.m. 

Wrestlers will hand in their uniforms Thursday after school in the wrestling room.

 Bulletin announcement for students on Testing 2017:
Students Grades 6-7-8- 11 will be taking the Smarter Balanced and SD Science test in the next few weeks.  Please make plans to be here during testing as it must be made up.   All students will need headsets – please bring these to school. 
All backpacks and cell phones must be put away during testing.  Cell phones can not be accessed during testing.   All computers must be charged – you will test on your computer!

MS/HS Bulletin February 27

Congratulations to Trevor Pray for placing 4th at the State Wrestling Tournament. 

Congratulations to all of the Destination Imagination teams that competed at Regionals this weekend. All six of the competitive teams that competed will be moving on to State DI in Pierre on March 25. Due to scheduling conflicts, one Groton team - Out of the Boxers - will be competing at Regionals in Custer in two weeks - good luck to them!

  1.   All seniors who qualified for the Regents Scholar should see Mrs. Sternhagen if you did not check your name on the Regents Scholar list on Thursday.  The Regents Scholar award goes to students who complete 4 math, 4 science and 2 foreign language with no final grade lower than a C and a B grade point average. 
  2. Be sure and get the FAFSA done by March 1st so you are eligible for loans and grants for tech or college!  www.fafsa.gov
  3. If you are planning on attending a 4-year SD public school, you will need an 18 in English and a 20 in math or a 3 or 4 on the Smarter Balanced ELA and Math in order to be placed into entry level college English and Math.   The SD College Ready Curriculum can help if you do not meet these minimum scores – see Mrs. Sternhagen.

The dates and locations for the public meetings concerning the proposed building project at Groton Area MS/HS have been finalized.  Encourage your parents to attend the meetings.

Next week is National FFA Week.  During this week, we will be having a few activities.

Grade 12:  Reminders from English 12 yesterday:
  1.   All seniors who qualified for the Regents Scholar should see Mrs. Sternhagen if you did not check your name on the Regents Scholar list on Thursday.  The Regents Scholar award goes to students who complete 4 math, 4 science and 2 foreign language with no final grade lower than a C and a B grade point average. 
  2. Be sure and get the FAFSA done by March 1st so you are eligible for loans and grants for tech or college!  www.fafsa.gov
  3. If you are planning on attending a 4-year SD public school, you will need an 18 in English and a 20 in math or a 3 or 4 on the Smarter Balanced ELA and Math in order to be placed into entry level college English and Math.   The SD College Ready Curriculum can help if you do not meet these minimum scores – see Mrs. Sternhagen. 
  4. More local scholarships will be handed in on March 1st!  Keep working!
  5. If you were absent yesterday or still need to hand in local scholarships see Mrs. Sternhagen as soon as possible!

National FCCLA Week is Feb. 13-17, our local chapter will be celebrating by holding several events this week.

Tuesday, February 14 - Lollipop Sales at lunch - send them to a friend with delivery at the end of the day!

Congratulations to the Groton MathCounts team for earning the third place trophy and plaque at Wednesday's Northeastern South Dakota Chapter MathCounts Competition at NSU!  Team members were Trey Gengerke, Tanae Lipp, Samantha Pappas, and Isaac Smith.  Congratulations to Isaac for also placing ninth in the countdown round!  Great season, mathletes!

Remind your parents that Parent/Teacher Conferences are today from 1:30 – 8:30 p.m.  School will dismiss at 1:15 p.m.  You will get 10 bonus points if your parents have a conference with all your teachers.  If you have an A or A- in a class they will not need to visit with those teachers. 

Saturday, February 18 is the 6th Annual – Lee Schlagel Memorial Basketball Tournament at the Clark High School.  Groton boys’ will be one of the teams playing.  There will be a lunch starting at 11:00 and a silent auction and raffle items.

Quarve Quackers 6th Annual Relay for Life Pie Auction on Saturday, February 18 at Todd’s Tavern in Amherst.  Supper at 5:00 p.m.   Pie auction at 7:00 p.m.  All proceeds to to tMarshall County Relay for Life.

Summer registration for dual credit is now open.  Applications are on the counter in the office.  Please see Dr. Schwan for questions.

Seniors--Early senior privileges are scheduled to begin on February 24th.  You will not receive early privileges on February 24th if you have had any unexcused absences this school year, suspensions for behavior, or more than one grade of a "D" at the time of early granting.  Please read the handbook regarding the criteria for early senior privileges as well as the requirements for maintaining privileges throughout the remainder of the year, most specifically the GPA and grade requirements.  Seniors will not receive privileges until all senior pictures have been remitted.  You will receive an e-mail from me on February 21st if you are not eligible for early senior privileges.  Please see me with any questions, Dr. Schwan.

Grades 10-11:  You and your parents are invited to a presentation on Getting Ready for your Future on Feb 9th from 6-7 pm in the computer lab.  Jennie Thompson from Great Lakes Financial will be here to teach you and your parents about scholarships and financial aid.

Grade 12:  FAFSA Lab – On Thursday, February 9th at 7 pm during Parent Teacher Conferences, Jennie Thompson from Great Lakes will be available in the computer lab to work with parents on filling out the FAFSA.   Student and parent tax information from 2015 is required along with social security numbers, bank account info, and asset information.  It would be a good idea to get started with the FAFSA prior to meeting with Jennie and then ask her any questions you may have about finishing the process.  You and your student will also need identification numbers (FSAID) in order to complete the FAFSA. 
 
Grades 11-12:   Reminder of things to do for the ACT Test on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017 in Aberdeen.   Bring your admission ticket and a driver’s license (photo ID), 2 calculators, pencils with erasers, a watch, and possibly a water bottle.  Be sure and show up at the testing location at least 15 minutes early (7:45).  It might be a good idea to review last minute formulas and rules.  No caps are to be worn during testing.  No beverage will be allowed in the testing area.  No cell phones are to be used at any time during test (including the break). Testing should conclude around noon.  Those who are taking the writing assessment should be done by 12:45 p.m.  Be sure and do the practice test prior to the test.  Stop by the School Counseling Office if you need an extra copy.
