MS/HS Bulletin February 24



The Prom Committee with meet Wed. during Advisory and possibly for a little bit after school? 
National Honor Society applications are due Monday, March 2.  Please give to Mrs. Seibel, Mrs. Erickson or Mrs. Schwan.  Thank you.
When parking in the school parking lots make sure you are not blocking other cars in.  Staff and students need to leave during the school day and their cars have been blocked because of inappropriate parking.  People have appointments that they are trying to get too. 

Tomorrow is LifeTouch Picture Day.  

To celebrate National FFA Week, the Groton FFA Chapter will be hosting the first annual Ag Olympics on Thursday for the Jr. High and Friday for the High School during advisory.  The Jr. High (6, 7, and 8) will go to the old gym during advisory on Thursday to participate in the activities and the High School will participate on Friday.

Celebrate National FFA Week with the Groton FFA Chapter this week.  There will be dress up days each day.  Any student can dress up and we will have prizes for the best dressed student.  Outfits must be school appropriate and follow school policy.  

Hat Day will be all week.  Students can wear a hat each day for $1 or pay for the entire week for $4.  Students who wish to wear a hat will pay a FFA member in the library before school each day and pick up a special sticker that they must wear to show they have paid to wear a hat.  Hats must be school appropriate to wear.

Juniors and Seniors--if you are interested in volunteering as a summer reader at the elementary library please contact Mrs. Schwan.  We are looking for 7-8 students who would be willing to spend time with the elementary students 1 time for approximately 30-45 minutes reading and facilitating an activity.  This is a great opportunity for those of you going into education and for anyone looking to add to your volunteer hours. 

Good luck to the Girls’ Basketball Team at Regions at Webster tonight.  We will play Sisseton, the 2nd game around 6:00 p.m.   The team will be dismissed at 3:10 pm.

Aberdeen Cougars won the PeeWee C State Tournmant this weekend.  Congradulations!

Chapter MathCounts team members and individuals will have their picture taken during advisory on Thursday in room #226.  Please check in with advisors.

Juniors and seniors who have a 3.0 or higher GPA will meet in the conference room on Thursday at 9:10 a.m. to receive applications for National Honor Society.  You must attend whether you plan to apply or not. 

ICU on today will end at 4:30.

There will be a FFA meeting in Advisory on Wednesday in Mr. Franken’s room.

Spring Dance registration forms are in the office.

Lunch on Friday will be tomato soup, grilled cheese, fruit, veg. and dip. 

Grades 10-12:  More information is available on the Build Dakota Scholarship program – http://doe.sd.gov/builddakota/  There will be 300 scholarships which will pay full tuition, fees, and books.  Approved 2015 high need, industry programs for the scholarship are:  Welding, Precision Machining, Automotive, Practical Nursing (select programs), Building Trades/Construction, Energy Technician, Engineering Technician, Medical Laboratory Technician.   Students will be eligible based on interest, financial need, aptitude shown by coursework or testing.  Students will need to agree to stay in SD and work in a high tech field for three years following graduation.  Please see Mrs. Sternhagen for more information.

There is a lost phone in the office. 

Please remind your parents that today are Parent/Teacher conferences.  Again, you will get 10 bonus points if your parents have a conference with each of your teachers.  Teachers posted grades on Monday to determine which students have an A in a particular class.  Parents do not need to visit with the teachers whose class students have an A in. 

School will dismiss at 1:15 today.  No school on Friday and Monday. 

Seniors, if you have not attended the mandatory meeting, there will be a final meeting at 1:00 today, in the library conference room.

ICU will be held on Friday from 9-3 for those students still on the list on Thursday

This weekend will be the last home games for the Aberdeen Cougars -- they host Watertown at 8 pm Friday and Mitchell on Saturday at 8 pm.  Following Saturday night's game there will be a "Skate with the Cougars" event.  Bring your skates and enjoy the ice!

Grades 11-12:  Today, Thursday, February 12th, during 5th hour (10:59 – 11:33) in the conference room, GHS will host guest speaker, Kyle Ross.  Kyle will talk about his experiences working in the western North Dakota Oil fields where he has held many different positions.  This session is an informative session on the kinds of jobs and opportunities that are available in the technical and energy fields.   All juniors and seniors (boys and girls) are invited to attend if interested.

The Doland Student Council will be hosting a Dodgeball Tournament on Monday, February 16th at 6:00 P.M. in the Doland H.H.H. Auditorium. All proceeds will be donated to Children’s Miracle Network. Grade 11:  Youth Business Adventure:  Applications are due today. 

Grades 11-12:   Reminder of things to do for the ACT Test on Saturday, Feb. 7th in Aberdeen.   Bring your admission ticket and a driver’s license (photo ID), 2 calculators, pencils with erasers, a watch, and possibly a water bottle.  Be sure and show up at the testing location at least 15 minutes early.  It might be a good idea to review last minute formulas and rules.  No caps are to be worn during testing.  No beverage will be allowed in the testing area.  No cell phones are to be used at any time during test (including the break). Testing should conclude around noon.  Those who are taking the writing assessment should be done by 12:45 p.m.  Be sure and do the practice test prior to the test.  Stop by the GO if you need an extra copy.

MS/HS Bulletin February 6

Open Gym on Sunday from 3:00-7:00 in the arena.

Show Choir t-shirt order forms are due today to Mr. Swanson.

Seniors--Mandatory Senior Privilege meeting on today during advisory in the band room.  If you are unable to attend this meeting an alternative meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 10th during advisory also in the band room.  You must make one of those meetings work.  E-mail or see me if you have questions.  Thank you, Mrs. Schwan

Feb. 9-12 is National FCCLA Week, our chapter will be celebrating with the following activities:

* Monday - FCCLAers wear an FCCLA shirt

* Crush Can sales during lunch Monday - Wednesday with the cans be delivered on Thursday at the end of the day!

* Miss Sweetheart Day on Tuesday - all the boys get a heart, but if they talk to a girl, they have to give him your heart.  Whichever girl has the most heart is Miss Sweetheart!

* Mr. Sweetheart Day on Wednesday - all the girls get a heart, but if they talk to a boy, they have to give him your heart.  Whichever boy has the most heart is Mr. Sweetheart!

*Pregnancy Belly Fundraiser - Thursday, Feb. 5 - Tuesday, Feb. 10 -put money in the jar of the senior boy basketball player or senior wrestler who you would like to see wear the pregnancy belly!  Jars will be in the office.  The top two will wear the bellies on Wednesday, Feb. 11! All proceeds going to our community improvement fund!

Junior class--Each member of the junior class must bring $10 and a pan of bars today, to the office, for the junior class fundraiser meal that will be held on Saturday during the Double Header basketball games vs. Warner.  Last year's class had a 100% return...!

Boys and girls basketball players, managers, statisticians and cheerleaders.  Parents’ night forms are available in the office.   Girls’ forms are pink.  Boys’ forms are blue.   They are due back on Monday, February 9.    Parents Night will include varsity, JV and “C” Team. 

The Doland Student Council will be hosting a Dodgeball Tournament on Monday, February 16th at 6:00 P.M. in the Doland H.H.H. Auditorium. All proceeds will be donated to Children’s Miracle Network. The cost is $30 for a team of 6. Please register your team by February 10th. Grade 12:  FAFSA Lab on Thursday, February 12th starting at 7:30.  Get help from Jennie Thompson, Great Lakes Financial representative, to fill out the FAFSA.  Bring your tax returns and work on FAFSA.gov.  Sign up with Mrs. Sternhagen

Grades 10-11:   On Thursday, February 12th from 6:30 – 7:30 in the Computer Lab, Jennie Thompson, Great Lakes Financial representative, will give a presentation on financial career planning, college choices and scholarship searches on the internet.   This is a very important introduction in to getting ready for college and financial aid.  Please plan to attend with your parents. 

Grade 11:  Youth Business Adventure:  Applications are due today. 

Grades 11-12:   Reminder of things to do for the ACT Test on Saturday, Feb. 7th in Aberdeen.   Bring your admission ticket and a driver’s license (photo ID), 2 calculators, pencils with erasers, a watch, and possibly a water bottle.  Be sure and show up at the testing location at least 15 minutes early.  It might be a good idea to review last minute formulas and rules.  No caps are to be worn during testing.  No beverage will be allowed in the testing area.  No cell phones are to be used at any time during test (including the break). Testing should conclude around noon.  Those who are taking the writing assessment should be done by 12:45 p.m.  Be sure and do the practice test prior to the test.  Stop by the GO if you need an extra copy.
